About This Belutsch
Where it comes from
This is a Baluch runner, also written Belouch, a tribal weaving from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, 212 x 97 cm (6'11" x 3'2"). Baluch weavers are known for deep, earthy colour and bold angular geometry knotted from memory rather than from a drawn plan. This piece departs from the usual dark ground of the type, set instead on ivory.
What you see
The overall impression is pale and busy at once: an ivory field carries a dense scatter of small red figures, bird-like or quadruped, repeated again and again between the larger forms of the pattern. Three serrated medallions run down the centre in a single column, joined by a narrow spine, each one ringed by rosettes and these small red creatures. A wide indigo border closes the field, filled with a fine diamond lattice and edged by narrower brick-red guard stripes marked with small crosses, the pale ground and the dark border holding each other in sharp, deliberate contrast.
How it was made
The wool was spun by hand before it was dyed and knotted, and hand-spun yarn never takes an entirely even thickness, which is why the surface has a slight, matte nub rather than a printed flatness. At a density of roughly 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, the weaver had room to set each small figure a little differently from its neighbours, a freedom a finer, workshop-grade density would not allow. The cotton warp keeps the runner stable and true, while the wool pile, kept to about 6 millimetres, gives it a firm, close hand rather than a deep one.

At 212 x 97 cm this is a runner for a hallway or a landing, or along a bedside where a narrow strip of floor wants colour rather than cover. The ivory ground lifts a corridor that gets little daylight, while the brick reds and small notes of indigo keep it from ever feeling washed out. Underfoot the hand-spun wool sits dense and firm, made to be walked on rather than kept for best, and a nomadic weave of this density takes daily traffic well. Pass it morning and evening and the small red figures scattered across the field keep turning up in different company each time, never quite in the same place twice.
