About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

A Baluch rug, hand-knotted by nomadic weavers from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, measuring 200 x 104 cm (6'7" x 3'5"). Baluch weavings are known for bold, angular geometry and a deep, earthy palette dominated by red and indigo, carried from memory rather than from any drawn plan. This piece is built on a single idea repeated five times, which is unusual for a tradition that more often gathers around one central form.

What you see

The field is a deep indigo, and across it march five hexagonal medallions in brown, cream and rust, spaced with near-identical framing so the eye reads a sequence rather than a centrepiece. Slender cypress-like trees stand in the corners, and small stylised quadrupeds and figures repeat symmetrically around the medallions, holding the rhythm without disturbing it. A wide border closes the composition, stacking a rust-red guard stripe, an olive band, an ivory zigzag and a navy meander on camel ground, together taking up close to a fifth of the rug's width.

How it was made

The wool is hand-spun rather than machine-spun, which gives it an uneven thickness and a matte, low, tight surface with no sheen at all. Working without a cartoon, the weaver carried the medallion in her memory through all five repeats, and the small shifts between them, closer here, a shade wider there, are the trace of a hand repeating a shape rather than a machine printing one. The cotton warp beneath keeps the piece stable and flat despite the density of the knotting.

At home

At 200 x 104 cm this is a rug for a hallway, a landing, or beside a bed, somewhere it is seen in passing rather than sat around. The indigo holds its depth against pale floorboards and warms considerably wherever the rust and camel tones catch the light, which along a hallway is often only for a few hours a day. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for the kind of daily crossing a runner takes rather than for a room kept for best. Walk its length and the five medallions arrive one after another, the same idea told five times, never quite the same twice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 200 × 104 cm (2.08 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
