About This Belutsch
Where it comes from
This is a Baluch, also written Belouch, a tribal weaving from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, measuring 210 x 115 cm (6'11" x 3'9"). Weavings of this kind are known for deep reds set against indigo, for bold angular geometry, and often for a layout built around a single prayer niche. Here the weaver has taken that same geometric language and set it into an unusually disciplined order.
What you see
The eye lands first on a field of deep indigo, almost black in places, filled with a tight grid of octagonal medallions arranged in three even rows. Brick red and camel alternate through the grid, each medallion drawn to the same scale and spaced the same distance from its neighbours. There is no single medallion at the centre; instead two ivory panels sit in the corners, carrying stylised floral vines with small reddish figures worked into them that read as birds. A wide dark red border of interlocking diamonds closes the field, framed in turn by narrow bands of cream-gold and dark red zigzag.
How it was made
The pile is handspun wool, knotted by hand onto a cotton warp, at a density of roughly 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre. Handspun yarn keeps a slight, natural unevenness that machine-spun thread never has, and on a nomadic loom worked from memory rather than a drawn cartoon, that unevenness usually carries through into the pattern as well. Here it largely does not: the rows of medallions hold their spacing with a rigor closer to a workshop plan than to the freehand geometry this weaving group is generally known for, while the 6 mm pile keeps the handspun wool's texture plainly present underfoot.
At home
A rug this size suits a hallway or a landing, somewhere the pattern is taken in on the way past rather than settled into for long. The indigo ground holds its own against dark floorboards and warms a pale stone floor equally well, and the reds and camel keep it from ever reading as cold. Underfoot it is dense and firm, a weight of wool suited to a threshold that sees daily use rather than a piece kept for best. Light moving along a hallway wall catches the medallions row by row, and it is that quiet, ordered rhythm that stays with you.
