About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

This is a Baluch, also written Belouch — a tribal weaving from the southeastern borderlands of Iran, 190 x 98 cm (6'3" x 3'3"). The type is known for deep reds and indigo grounds, often carried as a prayer-niche layout handed down within one household for generations. This piece skips the mihrab arch for something more disciplined: a field ruled into straight columns.

What you see

The field reads almost black, a deep blue-aubergine that only shows its undertone in raking light. Across it march tight vertical rows of rust-red boteh, the elephant-foot motif repeated with a precision this weaving group rarely allows itself. A wide border interrupts the dark ground: alternating rosettes in cream, pink and deep red, floral and unusually lively against the plain columns inside, held in by a narrow zigzag guard stripe.

How it was made

The regularity in the field is more remarkable for being hand-knotted from memory, on a portable loom, rather than drawn from a plan. Hand-spun wool varies in thickness knot to knot, which usually gives Baluch weaving its soft, slightly uneven line — here the weaver held that line straight for the full 190 centimetres of the field. Knotted at a density of some 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, with the pile sheared to just 6 millimetres, the surface stays close and firm, the flat weave visible at the selvedge.

At home

At under a metre wide, this rug suits a hallway, a bedside, or beside a door rather than an open floor. The near-black ground hides scuffs and low light alike, while the rust-red columns keep it from feeling flat. The wool is dense and firm underfoot, made to be walked on daily. Catch it by lamplight and the columns light up one row at a time.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 190 × 98 cm (1.86 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 1.86 m² that is roughly 240,000 to 300,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
