About This Belutsch
Where it comes from
A Baluch rug, a tribal and nomadic weaving from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, 190 x 103 cm (6'3" x 3'5"). Baluch weavers, also written Belouch, knot from memory rather than a drawn plan, and their rugs are known for bold, angular geometry set against deep, earthy reds and indigo. This piece carries that same colour and geometry, but draws it with a precision not always found in work made without a cartoon.
What you see
The field is a deep brick red, filled edge to edge with a chained lattice of diamonds, each one outlined in ivory and holding a smaller diamond nested inside, the surrounding cells breaking into aubergine-black. Small orange and rust diamonds punctuate the grid at intervals, warming the red without disturbing its rhythm. There is no medallion here to gather the eye; the pattern simply repeats, diagonal and continuous, out to a wide frame of stacked border stripes in red, ivory and dark brown, each one hooked and diamonded in turn.
How it was made
Handspun wool is knotted onto a cotton warp, at a density of 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, and it is this density, together with a disciplined hand, that keeps the lattice so evenly drawn across the whole field. Handspun yarn varies slightly in thickness from thread to thread, which usually gives a Baluch pattern its soft, living irregularity; here that same yarn has been controlled into a grid with almost no distortion, closer to a woven textile than a rug field is meant to be. The pile is clipped low, to six millimetres, which sharpens every outline and leaves a matte surface with no sheen to soften the lines.
At home
At just over a metre wide, this is a rug for a hallway, a landing, or the floor beside a bed, somewhere it is seen at close range and often underfoot. Against pale boards the brick red and cream will hold their own without darkening the space, and against dark wood the orange accents will lift quietly rather than compete. The wool is dense and firm underfoot, low enough in pile to take daily footsteps without complaint. Walked past every day, its lattice keeps offering the same quiet discovery: a nomadic hand, drawn with a workshop's calm.
