About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

This is a Baluch rug, also written Belouch, a tribal weaving from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, measuring 207 x 103 cm (6'9" x 3'5"). Baluch weavers are known for bold, angular geometry set against deep reds and indigo, patterns carried in memory rather than drawn on paper, passed on generation to generation.

What you see

The field is a deep brick red, and rather than settling on one medallion, three hooked diamonds march down its length, each held apart by a near-black panel dense with small florets. Salmon-pink and cream accents catch the eye inside the diamonds and again in the rosettes of the border. That border runs wide, alternating dark rosette panels with diagonal serrated stripes, and is drawn in by several narrow ivory zigzag guard stripes that hold the whole composition together.

How it was made

This rhythm of three, known in the trade as Seh Torandj, comes from a design carried by hand rather than a cartoon pinned to a loom, so no two of the medallions are quite identical. The pile is hand-spun wool, clipped low to six millimetres, knotted onto a cotton warp at a density of 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, close enough to hold the sharp edges of the diamonds crisp, while the hand-spun yarn gives the surface a slightly ribbed, matte texture rather than a smooth sheen.

At home

This size and shape suits a hallway, a landing, or the foot of a bed, somewhere it is seen in passing rather than sat over. The brick red warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood, and the low, dense pile takes daily footsteps without complaint. Low afternoon light picks out the ivory zigzag stripes and the three medallions in turn, leading the eye down its length.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 207 × 103 cm (2.13 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 2.13 m² that is roughly 270,000 to 340,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
