About This Turkaman
Where it comes from
A Turkoman rug — also written Turkmen, Turkoman, Turcoman — 205 x 152 cm (6'9" x 5'0"), hand-knotted by tribal weavers whose homeland straddles Iran and the wider Central Asian steppe. The type is known above all for its repeating gul medallions on a deep red ground, tight and durable knotting handed down through clans. This piece keeps the density and loses the medallion, building instead around its frame.
What you see
The field is a deep navy, almost black, crossed by rows of burgundy and brick-red diamonds locked into a lattice that runs edge to edge with no centre to rest on. Cream bands cut horizontally through it, breaking the repeat into tiers. What holds the eye, though, is the border: not one band but a whole stack of them, cream, camel and burgundy, striped and diamond-patterned in turn, running a good fifth of the rug's width. Sage green and slate blue surface briefly in the narrowest guard stripes. The effect is less a rug with an edge than a rug built outward from one.
How it was made
A silk warp runs under the hand-spun wool pile, and it is the reason the border reads as clearly as it does. Silk spins far finer than cotton, so the knots sit tighter and the outline of each stripe stays crisp rather than blurring into the next. At 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre, that precision is close to the ceiling of what a wool-piled rug can hold, and at 6 mm the pile stays short enough to keep every line sharp underfoot as well as to the eye. This is forty to sixty years of a weave built to last.
At home
At this size the rug sits well in a bedroom, beside or at the foot of the bed, where the navy ground holds its own against dark wood and quietly grounds a pale floor. The pile is short and firm, closer to a floor you barely feel than one you sink into, and it takes daily footsteps without complaint. Catch it in low morning light and the borders seem to step forward, one stripe at a time.
