About This Kordi
Where it comes from
Kordi rugs — also written Kurdi — are knotted by Kurdish tribal weavers across the wide western belt of Iran, from Kurdistan through Kermanshah, worked from memory rather than a fixed plan. This one measures 298 x 145 cm (9'9" x 4'9"). The type is known for a symmetric knot on a wool foundation and for colour that runs deep — strong red, indigo, gold.
What you see
The field is a deep brick red, kept open apart from small geometric fillers scattered across it. Rising from it, a large stepped diamond medallion holds a plain ivory core that reads almost white against the red, its outline angular and indented. The four corners answer it directly, navy spandrel blocks each set with a cream diamond, giving the field a symmetry that feels almost drawn rather than knotted from memory. A wide multi-band border, red-grounded, closes the design, its navy guard stripe carrying rosette and hook motifs.
How it was made
This is hand-knotted, tied with the symmetric knot Kurdish weavers favour, on a cotton warp that keeps it stable. The pile is hand-spun wool, sheared to about 12 millimetres, with a slightly uneven, ribbed hand that machine-carded wool never has. At 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, the density is moderate rather than fine — enough for a clean, large-scale shape, since memory-work favours bold repeatable geometry over intricate detail. The same discipline carries into the corners, where the navy blocks answer the medallion almost exactly, which is why the field stays open, letting medallion and corners do the work alone.
