About This Belutsch
Where it comes from
This is a Baluch, also written Belouch, a tribal weaving from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, measuring 219 x 119 cm (7'2" x 3'11"). The type is known for its earthy palette of deep red and indigo and for prayer-niche mihrab layouts knotted from memory rather than drawn from a plan. This particular piece carries an unusually exact, mirrored symmetry for a weaving of this kind.
What you see
The field is a deep, near-black espresso brown, dense with brick-red and burnt-orange tree motifs. They stand in two columns, mirrored down to the last branch, flanking a narrow zigzag panel at the centre. Each tree closes at the tip into a shape that might be read as a leaf, or a hand, repeated in strict alternation up the field. A wide red border runs around the whole, set with small diamond medallions in cream, black and rust, the brightest colour in the piece against the darkest ground.
How it was made
The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted onto a cotton warp at somewhere between 128,000 and 160,000 knots per square metre, worked from memory on a portable loom rather than from a drawn plan. Hand-spun yarn keeps an uneven thickness that machine yarn never has, and this is what gives the surface its dry, matte density, with no sheen to catch the light. That the two mirrored columns of trees still meet so precisely, worked freehand across months at the loom, is the harder achievement here.
At home
At 219 x 119 cm this suits a hallway, a landing, or the floor beside a bed, somewhere seen daily rather than crossed by furniture. Against a pale floor the near-black field grounds the room, and the red and orange trees catch what light there is. Underfoot the wool is dense, firm and matte, built to be walked on. It is the low morning light on the border medallions that stays with you.
