About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

A Baluch, also written Belouch, is a tribal weaving from the border country of southeastern Iran, and this one measures 165 x 89 cm (5'5" x 2'11"). The type is known for deep reds and indigo set against dark grounds, and for bold, angular geometry carried from memory rather than drawn on paper. Here the ground is ivory, which marks this piece as unusual before you have looked at anything else.

What you see

The pale field carries three brick-red medallions, set one above the other in a plain column, each drawn identically and flanked by mirrored, serrated vine and leaf forms. Because the medallions repeat exactly, the dense vine work around them reads as a clear chain rather than a crowded field. A wide brick-red border runs around the whole, filled with stylised palmettes and rosettes in rust, teal and mustard, and is closed on each side by a narrow navy guard stripe patterned with a white diamond lattice, a sharp, cool line against the warm ground it encloses.

How it was made

Baluch rugs are knotted on a portable loom, from memory, by a single weaver over months, rather than to a drawn cartoon - which is why the pattern is never perfectly mechanical. This piece is hand-knotted in hand-spun wool on a wool warp, at a density of 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre with a 6 mm pile, dense enough to hold a firm, clearly drawn line rather than let one blur into the next. That is what let three medallions, spaced by hand and eye alone, come out aligned in as tidy a column as this.

At home

At this size, the rug suits a hallway, a landing, or the floor beside a bed, rather than a large open room. The ivory field lifts a space with little daylight, and the brick red holds its own against dark wood or a dark door frame. Underfoot the wool is dense and matte, firm rather than soft, and made to be walked on rather than kept for best. Morning light catches each medallion in turn as you pass.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 165 × 89 cm (1.47 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 1.47 m² that is roughly 190,000 to 230,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
