About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

A Baluch tribal rug, 217 x 127 cm (7'1" x 4'2"), woven in the borderland regions of southeastern Iran that gave this weaving its name. Baluch rugs are known for a warmth of colour, deep reds set against indigo, and for bold, angular geometry carried from memory rather than from any drawn plan.

What you see

The field is a warm brick red, and across it sit three cream lozenge medallions in a single row, rather than stacked one above another as is more usual for this design. Each medallion holds a mirrored floral spray, set among dense navy-and-olive scrollwork turning through the red ground. A broad border of rosettes and vine in olive, navy and cream frames the field, closed by a thin navy guard stripe.

How it was made

This is the Seh Torandj, or three-medallion design, turned on its side: worked from memory, the weaver set her medallions in a row rather than down the length of the field, giving rhythm rather than a single held centre. The wool was hand-spun before knotting, and its slight unevenness gives the pile its flattened, matte hand rather than any sheen. Knotted onto a cotton warp at 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, the geometry holds firm while the low, 6 mm pile keeps the surface close and even.

At home

At 217 x 127 cm this rug suits a bedroom or a quiet seating corner, easily placed beside a bed or under a chair group. The brick red warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood. Underfoot the pile is short, dense and firm, made to take daily footfall rather than be spared it. As daylight crosses the room, the three cream medallions catch it one after another, the row seeming to travel gently across the field.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 217 × 127 cm (2.76 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 2.76 m² that is roughly 350,000 to 440,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
