About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

This is a Baluch runner — also written Beluch — 211 x 102 cm (6'11" x 3'4"), from the tribal borderlands of southeastern Iran. Baluch weavings are prized for their earthy palette of deep red and indigo, and for bold geometric patterns carried in memory rather than drawn out beforehand. This piece takes that geometry further than most, settling into a mirrored symmetry rarely seen in the format.

What you see

The field is a dark, almost black brown, against which two mirrored columns of rust-red and burnt-orange zigzag totems rise from end to end. Small stylised figures, faintly animal or human, appear near the top and bottom of each column, giving the pattern a quiet narrative alongside its symmetry. A wide border in deep red and rust, patterned with rows of small ivory and rose diamonds, runs along both sides and holds the columns firmly within the dark field.

How it was made

The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted by hand onto a cotton warp at 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, a density that let the weaver keep the mirrored totem columns crisp despite working from memory rather than a drawn plan. Hand-spinning leaves the yarn slightly uneven, which is why the surface reads matte and coarse to the touch rather than smooth. At twenty to forty years old, the 6 mm pile still stands firm and dense.

At home

A runner this size suits a hallway or landing, seen in passing rather than sat upon. Against a pale floor the dark field settles the space, while the rust and orange columns catch what light there is. Underfoot the dense, hand-spun wool feels firm, made for daily footsteps rather than careful protection. As light shifts, the columns seem to step forward and back.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 211 × 102 cm (2.15 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 2.15 m² that is roughly 280,000 to 340,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
