About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

This is a Baluch, also written Belouch, a tribal weaving from the border country of southeastern Iran, measuring 205 x 104 cm (6'9" x 3'5"). Baluch rugs are best known for prayer-niche, or mihrab, compositions gathered around a single point of focus. This piece keeps the same deep, earthy palette but sets it to a different, quieter plan, one with no centre at all.

What you see

The field glows a warm brick red, deepening toward the middle and warming toward orange at the edges. Across it runs an even grid of octagonal guls and cross-shaped motifs, repeated without pause and without a medallion to gather the eye. Each gul is drawn with a dark outline and an ivory edge, its interior touched with burgundy and navy. A narrow border in blackish-brown holds the field, set with small star rosettes in cream, rust and blue that stand out clearly against the darker ground.

How it was made

The rug is hand-knotted in wool spun by hand onto a cotton warp, at a density of roughly 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, with the pile kept low at about 6 millimetres. Hand-spun wool is never perfectly even in thickness, and that slight variation is likely what gives the field its gentle shift from deeper red at the centre to warmer red toward the edges. The low, dense pile is also what lets a pattern this regular hold its lines so cleanly, gul after gul, without one motif blurring into the next.

At home

A rug of this size and shape earns its place in a hallway or landing, or beside a bed, where its width fills a passage without crowding it. The red carries its own warmth, so it holds its own on a pale floor and asks nothing of the furniture around it. Underfoot it is dense and firm rather than soft and deep, wool that was clearly made to be walked on and to wear well doing so. As the light moves through the day, the grid of guls shifts very slightly in tone, calm and steady wherever it falls.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 205 × 104 cm (2.13 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 2.13 m² that is roughly 270,000 to 340,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
