About This Hossein-Abad
Where it comes from
This is a Hossein-Abad, also written Hosseinabad, a village weaving from the Hamadan region of western Iran, measuring 310 x 209 cm (10'2" x 6'10"). Hamadan is one of the most productive carpet-weaving districts in the world, and villages such as this one work to a single-wefted cotton foundation, known locally as Sennah Baft, that gives the rug an even, practical structure rather than a showpiece one.
What you see
A dense lattice of dark navy diamonds floats over a warm salmon-red ground, filling the field edge to edge in the manner of a Mahi-derived all-over pattern. Where a design like this is normally locked to a strict, mirrored repeat, a small cream medallion sits toward the right, well off the field's centre. Ivory spandrels pick up the corners, and a wide cream border carries polychrome blossoms in rust, olive and pink, held between narrow dark and rust guard stripes that set it apart from the red field.
How it was made
The rug is hand-knotted onto that cotton foundation in the single-wefted technique typical of Hamadan villages, which keeps the weave flat and stable underfoot. The pile is hand-spun wool, worked at a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre — respectable for a village piece, and enough to hold the lattice's fine diagonal lines crisply. Hossein-Abad weavers draw their patterns freehand rather than from a fixed workshop cartoon, and it is this freehand drawing, not an error, that let the medallion drift toward one side of the field instead of settling at its centre.
At home
At 310 x 209 cm this is a rug for a dining table or a living room seating group, large enough to hold its own under either. The salmon-red warms a pale wood or stone floor without needing dark furniture to justify it, while the cream border and medallion lift just as easily against something darker. The hand-spun wool sits at a moderate 12 mm pile, matte and firm underfoot, dense enough for a room that sees daily use rather than one kept for best.
