About This Hossein-Abad

Where it comes from

This is a Hossein-Abad, a village rug from the Hamadan weaving region of western Iran, measuring 309 x 203 cm (10'2" x 6'8"). The district is known for its single-wefted Sennah Baft weave on a cotton foundation and for patterns drawn freehand rather than from a workshop cartoon, which usually gives Hamadan pieces a certain looseness. This one is unusually orderly for its kind, a village rug that reads with the calm of a plan.

What you see

The field is a warm, ziegelrot red, covered edge to edge in a fine navy diamond lattice, the Mahi or Herati pattern repeated with real consistency. At the centre sits a small ivory medallion, lozenge-shaped and neat, and the four corner spandrels pick up its ivory-and-navy palette so precisely that the whole layout mirrors itself top to bottom, side to side. A dark navy-black border carries a repeating floral vine, flanked by a wider tan-brown band, and together they hold the red field the way a good frame holds a picture rather than fighting it.

How it was made

That evenness comes from the loom, not from a cartoon pinned above it. Hossein-Abad weavers work from memory and habit, which is exactly why lattice patterns can drift row by row, wider here, tighter there. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, tied by hand into hand-spun wool over a cotton warp, this weaver had the density to keep the diamonds true across the full 309 centimetres, and a 12 mm pile that stayed low enough to hold the drawing sharp rather than blurring it.

At home

A rug this size and this settled sits naturally under a dining table or in front of a living room sofa, where the pattern can be taken in from several angles rather than one. The red holds its warmth against a pale floor and equally against dark wood furniture, without needing either to defer to it. Underfoot the wool is dense and matter-of-fact, matte rather than lustrous, firm enough for a room that gets daily use. As the light moves across the afternoon, the navy lattice darkens and lifts in turn, and the small ivory medallion stays exactly where the eye expects to find it.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 309 × 203 cm (6.27 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 6.27 m² that is roughly 1.3 to 1.6 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
