About This Hossein-Abad

Where it comes from

This is a Hossein-Abad rug, a village weaving from the Hamadan region of western Iran, measuring 321 x 208 cm (10'6" x 6'10"). Hamadan is one of the most productive carpet-weaving districts in Persia, and its villages knot on a cotton foundation in the single-wefted Sennah baft structure, drawing their own patterns freehand rather than from a fixed workshop plan.

What you see

A warm brick red field is crowded with a fine navy diamond lattice, and at its centre sits a sharply drawn star-shaped medallion in cream and rust. The four corner spandrels repeat that same star almost exactly, giving the field an unusually precise, mirrored symmetry. Around it runs a wide navy border carrying cream palmette and vine motifs, held between narrower rust and ivory guard stripes that set the whole pattern clearly against the red ground.

How it was made

That symmetry is earned rather than assumed. Like its Hamadan neighbours, the rug is knotted single-wefted on a cotton warp, a structure that keeps the weave stable and lets the drawing stay even instead of drifting, as freehand village patterns often do. At a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, the weaver was able to count and repeat the medallion's points closely enough to echo them in all four spandrels, a matching precision not every village weaving attempts. The hand-spun wool pile, kept low at 12 millimetres, holds that fine drawing crisply rather than letting it soften.

At home

A rug this size belongs under a dining table or in front of a sofa in a living or dining room, where the red ground warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark furniture. The low, dense pile feels firm and even underfoot, built for daily use rather than careful protection. As the light shifts through the day, the navy lattice catches it in turn, and the mirrored medallion at the centre stays the thing the eye keeps returning to.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 321 × 208 cm (6.68 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 6.68 m² that is roughly 1.3 to 1.7 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
