About This Hossein-Abad
Where it comes from
Hossein-Abad is a village weaving from the Hamadan district of western Iran, one of the countless small communities that together make Hamadan one of the world's most productive carpet regions. This piece measures 329 x 206 cm (10'10" x 6'9"), a size that sits comfortably under a dining table or in front of a sofa. Hamadan village work is prized for its honesty rather than its refinement, and this particular rug repays a closer look with a discipline not every piece of its kind carries.
What you see
The field is a deep brick red, crossed by a fine dark navy-black diamond lattice in the Mahi tradition, each cell holding small notes of teal, dusty rose, gold and blue. At the centre sits a compact ivory medallion, and the four corner spandrels echo its shape so closely that the whole field reads as mirrored rather than merely repeating. A wide black-ground border carries a floral scroll in cream, red and gold, darker than the field and held in place by narrower red and patterned guard stripes. Where an all-over Mahi pattern can easily scatter the eye across the repeat, this one keeps returning it to the centre.
How it was made
That precision comes from a single-wefted, or Sennah baft, construction over a cotton foundation, the tight structure village Hamadan weavers rely on for a stable, even surface. The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted at a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, dense enough to carry the sharp, high-contrast drawing that the medallion and spandrels depend on rather than let it blur into the surrounding trellis. At 12mm the pile sits low and tight, with a slight sheen across the wool that catches the red and ivory differently as the light moves.
At home
In a dining room this rug holds its own under a table and chairs without disappearing into the wood around it, and in a living room grouping it warms a pale floor while standing up to darker furniture without effort. Underfoot it is dense, firm and even, a weave built for daily use rather than careful protection. As the light shifts through the day, the ivory medallion and spandrels stay the still point in the pattern, the one part of the rug the eye keeps coming back to rest on.
