About This Hossein-Abad
Where it comes from
This is a village rug from Hossein-Abad, in the Hamadan weaving region of western Iran, measuring 308 x 206 cm (10'1" x 6'9"). Hamadan villages have long supplied some of Persia's most practical rugs, woven on a single-wefted structure that gives them an even, hard-wearing hand. Hossein-Abad pieces are known for honest, all-over geometric patterning rather than a dominating centrepiece.
What you see
The field is a soft, muted brick red, closer to salmon than rust, carrying a dense lattice of diamonds in dark navy across its whole surface. At the centre sits a small, clearly drawn ivory medallion, no larger than the diamonds around it, and the same ivory shape repeats in each corner, so the eye settles rather than fixes on one point. A wide navy border, filled with a floral vine in ivory and rust, closes the design, running darker than the field, with several narrow guard stripes beside it.
How it was made
Hossein-Abad rugs are knotted in the single-wefted, or Sennah Baft, technique on a cotton foundation, a method that pulls the weave tight and flat rather than ribbed. That flatness is what lets a design this fine hold together over a field this large: the diamond lattice stays crisp corner to corner instead of blurring, and the mirrored medallions stay exact. The pile is hand-spun wool, uneven by nature rather than machine-regular, knotted at a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre — close work for a village loom, and enough to let the pattern itself carry the piece rather than one bold central shape.

A rug this size sits naturally under a dining table or in front of a sofa, in a living or dining room where it can be taken in whole rather than in passing. The salmon red warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood or leather furniture, while the navy border keeps the whole piece grounded under a busy table setting.
