About This Lori-Kashkouli

Where it comes from

This is a Lori-Kashkouli runner from the Qashqai world of south-west Iran, 292 x 95 cm (9'7" x 3'1"). Kashkuli weavers are known among Qashqai groups for unusually fine knotting and for elaborate, slightly curvilinear medallions, the design that earned the group its name as the finest of Qashqai weaving. This particular runner carries that same fine hand into something plainer: a steady vertical stripe in place of a medallion.

What you see

The field opens in sandy beige, crossed by alternating bands of charcoal-grey and taupe-brown that run the full length without a break or a centre point. There is no medallion here, only the even repeat of the Moharamati stripe, each band close in tone to its neighbour, which keeps the effect calm rather than graphic. A plain camel-brown outer border holds this quietly, and just inside it runs a thin rust-red line of dashes and small diamonds, the only warmth in an otherwise earth-toned piece.

How it was made

Kashkuli work is knotted from memory on a portable loom, without a drawn plan, and that shows in how the stripes shift slightly in width along the length. The wool is hand-spun before knotting, so each thread varies a touch in thickness, and this is what gives the surface its fine ribbing between one stripe and the next. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre the weave holds a clean, straight edge, and a low 12 mm pile keeps the stripes crisp rather than soft.

At home

At 292 x 95 cm this is a hallway or landing runner, long enough to run a passage without repeating before the eye reaches the end. The beige and taupe warm a pale floor and hold their own against dark skirting, while the rust-dashed line keeps a dim hallway from reading flat. Underfoot it is dense and firm, made for daily footsteps, and the stripes catch the light a little differently through the day.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 292 × 95 cm (2.77 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 2.77 m² that is roughly 560,000 to 690,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
