About This Tabriz

Where it comes from

This is a Tabriz, hand-knotted in one of Persia's foremost weaving cities, 206 x 145 cm (6'9" x 4'9"). Tabriz workshops have spent five centuries refining the medallion carpet, usually in deep, jewel-toned colour, drawing each design from a cartoon and knotting it in the tight, symmetric Turkish knot that gives their rugs such crisp, disciplined outlines.

What you see

The first impression is of light rather than depth: a cream and warm ivory field, touched with soft gold, camel, dusty rose and sage, sits close to white where a Tabriz would usually run to deep jewel tones. Out of this pale ground rises a central floral medallion, its scrolling vines echoed by matching pendants above and below, so the whole composition falls into a quiet, mirrored rhythm. A wide camel and gold border, filled with its own scrolling florals and palmette-shaped pendants, closes the design without darkening it.

How it was made

The softness is partly down to materials. A silk warp lets the weaver pack far more knots into each square metre, here between 501,000 and 640,000, and that density is what keeps the pastel florals so cleanly drawn rather than soft-edged. Wool fills the field and border; silk runs through the motifs themselves, catching a light sheen where the wool stays matte. Signed by its maker, and at this density, a piece that represents months of steady work at the loom.

At home

This is a rug for a seating corner or a bedroom, sized to be seen close rather than crossed at speed. Against pale floors the ivory ground stays quiet; near darker furniture the gold and dusty rose motifs still hold their own. The pile is fine, even and dense enough for daily use, soft rather than deep underfoot. In afternoon light, the silk in the medallion catches first, then settles as the sun moves on.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 206 × 145 cm (2.99 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre; across 2.99 m² that is roughly 1.5 to 1.9 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
