About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
A Tabriz, 242 x 166 cm (7'11" x 5'5"), woven in one of Persia's great workshop cities and knotted with the symmetric knot that gives Tabriz work its taut, closely defined surface. Tabriz is best known for the central medallion, drawn to a cartoon and repeated with exacting balance. This piece breaks from that expectation: there is no medallion at all, and the ground beneath the pattern is a deep bottle green rather than the red or navy the design normally wears.
What you see
The eye takes in the whole field at once, a rich, dark green covered edge to edge in a fine Mahi lattice, gold and pink rosettes strung between serrated leaves in even, unbroken repeat. Small touches of dusty blue, ochre and sage sit within the lattice and echo again in the border, which runs wide and ivory around the field, filled with a floral vine and rosette meander and held between narrow salmon-pink guard stripes. Near the right-hand edge, worked quietly into the field, sits a small woven signature.
How it was made
That signature belongs to the Pirozian workshop, and it marks this as a named piece rather than an anonymous one. The knotting runs to between 501,000 and 640,000 knots per square metre, a density that asks months of steady work at the loom and is what allows the lattice to stay so fine and so regular across the whole field without the pattern blurring or drifting. The pile is wool strengthened with silk, clipped short to seven millimetres, which is why the surface reads smooth and slightly flat rather than deep, and why the rosettes keep their crisp outline even at this scale.
At home
A rug this size suits a dining table or a seating group in a living room, and the green ground is the reason to put it there rather than the more familiar red. Against pale floors it holds its own without warming the room the way a red Tabriz would; against dark wood or leather furniture it reads cool and composed rather than competing for attention. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, built for a room that gets daily use rather than one kept for best. As light moves across it through the day, the gold rosettes catch first, then fade back into the green.
