About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
A Tabriz Mahi carries the city's reputation for drawn precision, though not through the medallion for which Tabriz is best known. This piece, 296 x 202 cm (9'9" x 6'8"), is woven to a Tabriz pattern in India, and it takes the field in a different direction: an all-over diamond lattice rather than a central design, laid out with the same discipline the workshop tradition is famous for.
What you see
The field is a deep redbrown, overlaid with a dark blue diamond lattice repeated at a fine, even scale, so close and so regular that from a short distance it reads more like a woven textile print than a classical rug. There is no medallion to draw the eye to a centre; the pattern simply continues, panel by panel, until it meets a wide floral vine border in camel and ivory. Terracotta guard stripes frame that border on both sides, and within it small palmettes and rosettes carry touches of sage green, dusty rose and black against the pale ground, the one place in the rug where the palette opens up.
How it was made
The pile is wool finished with silk, knotted in the symmetric knot Tabriz weavers use for a tight, stable weave, at a density between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre. Silk takes a finer twist than wool, so wherever it runs through the pile the outline of the lattice stays sharp rather than softening, which is why the pattern holds its precision at this small a scale. That density, on a cotton warp with a low, closely clipped 12 mm pile, is also what gives the surface its unusual evenness: no abrash, no drift in the repeat, just a uniform micro-texture across the full 296 centimetres, the record of many months at the loom rather than a shortcut.
At home
A rug this size sits naturally under a dining table or in front of a sofa group, and this one holds its own in either setting. The redbrown and blue read as warm rather than heavy against a pale floor, and stand up well against dark wood furniture without needing a medallion to anchor the eye. Underfoot it is dense, firm and even, built for a room that gets used rather than one that is kept for best. As the light shifts through the day, the silk in the pile catches it in turn, and the lattice seems to move very slightly across the surface without ever losing its order.
