About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a Tabriz Mahi — the dense diamond-lattice design associated with Tabriz, one of Persia's great weaving cities, woven here in India at 308 x 246 cm (10'1" x 8'1"). Tabriz gave Persian carpet art its symmetric knot and its discipline of drawing from a cartoon, and the Mahi, also called Herati, repeat is one of the oldest and most recognisable patterns to come out of that tradition.
What you see
The field is a deep brownish-red, darker and more muted than the ivory or rust grounds this pattern more commonly wears, and it is this colour that holds the eye rather than the pale diamonds set across it. The lattice repeats edge to edge with no medallion to interrupt it, each small diamond drawn in ivory around a fine inner flower. A wide ivory border closes the field, filled with alternating palmettes in rust, olive and slate-blue, and kept crisp by several narrow guard stripes running around it.
How it was made
Tabriz work is knotted on the symmetric, or Turkish, knot, which locks each tuft evenly on both sides and gives the drawing its clean, almost architectural edge — visible in how precisely each lattice diamond holds its shape against the next. At 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, the weaver could set down the ivory outlines and their inner flowers with real control, a density that takes months rather than weeks at the loom. A thread of silk worked through the wool pile catches the light along those outlines, giving the dark field its quiet sheen without ever softening its depth.
At home
At 308 x 246 cm this is a rug for a living room seating group, generous enough under a sofa and chairs without crowding a table in front of it. The brownish-red holds its own against dark wood or leather furniture, warms a pale oak or stone floor rather than fighting it, and leaves the ivory lattice to carry the pattern quietly. Underfoot the pile is dense, even and firm at 12 millimetres, hand-knotted to be walked on rather than kept for best. When lamplight crosses it in the evening, the silk brings up a fine line of sheen along every diamond, and the room settles around it.
