About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a Tabriz runner, 250 x 58 cm (8'2" x 1'11"), from the Persian city long regarded as the benchmark for disciplined, workshop-drawn design. Tabriz weavers are known above all for the symmetric knot and for a command of the central medallion that has become shorthand for Persian luxury. This piece carries the signature of the Pirozian workshop.
What you see
The field is a deep, almost black-navy, filled edge to edge with a small-scale Mahi lattice that repeats without a break along the whole length. Down the centre runs a chain of scalloped ivory medallions, each holding a touch of camel and gold at its heart, with small teal-blue florets scattered between them. Toward the ends the medallions appear to draw in slightly, giving the sequence a quiet sense of perspective as the eye follows it down the runner. A wide ivory border, patterned with small florets and geometric motifs, closes the design, held in by thin rust-red and navy guard stripes.
How it was made
Tabriz work is knotted to a drawn plan rather than from memory, and here the density runs to 441,000-500,000 knots per square metre, in wool with a silk content that lets the finest lines - the scalloped edge of each medallion, the small turns of the lattice - stay sharp rather than soften into the field around them. A cotton warp holds the weave stable at this density, and a pile of only seven millimetres keeps the pattern reading crisply rather than blurring under a deeper nap. It is this combination that lets so dark a ground carry so much contrast.
At home
At 58 centimetres wide, this is a runner for a hallway or a landing, somewhere it will be seen end to end rather than sat upon. The near-black field takes the daily wear of a passage without showing it, and in a hallway with little daylight the ivory medallions and rust-red stripes still hold their own. Underfoot the wool and silk pile is dense, smooth and firm, made for a floor that is crossed often rather than reserved for best. Catch it under a lamp in the evening and the medallions seem to lift forward from the navy, as though lit from within.
