About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a hand-knotted Tabriz — sometimes spelled Tabrīz — from the weaving city of that name in north-western Iran, long regarded as a benchmark of Persian workshop craft, measuring 288 x 201 cm (9'5" x 6'7"). Tabriz workshops are known above all for precision drawing and, most often, a central medallion; this piece sets that expectation aside for a dense, all-over Mahi lattice, signed along the left edge by the Pirozian workshop.
What you see
The first impression is warmth: a camel-beige field, tightly patterned, reading almost like a woven textile. Across it runs a repeating Mahi diamond lattice, each cell outlined in rust-red and dark navy, drawn small and precise. There is no medallion to draw the eye to a centre; the pattern continues, even and unbroken, to the edge. A wide border closes the field — gold-ochre ground, dark navy floral cartouches, rust-red guard stripes, and terracotta-pink accents — taking close to a fifth of the rug's width.
How it was made
This precision comes from the symmetric, or Turkish, knot that Tabriz workshops favour, tied here at a density of between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre — a fineness that takes months at the loom and keeps even small motifs crisp rather than blurred. The pile mixes wool with silk; silk spins far finer than wool, so the weaver can pack more knots into the same space and cut a sharper edge on every diamond. At 7 mm the pile sits low and close.
