About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a Tabriz, also spelled Tabrīz, from the Persian city long regarded as the benchmark for workshop weaving, sized 300 x 201 cm (9'10" x 6'7"). Tabriz workshops are known for precise, symmetrically knotted drawing and a mastery of the central medallion, usually set against an ivory or navy ground. This piece, from the Abdollahi workshop, takes that design into a warmer register.
What you see
The first impression is warmth: a camel-beige field, finely patterned, in place of the cooler ivory or navy ground Tabriz medallions usually sit on. An all-over Mahi lattice covers the field, and from it a lobed medallion rises in brick red, its corners echoed by matching red spandrels, all held crisp by dark brown-black outlining. A wide ivory border, close to a sixth of the rug's width, carries a red floral vine and frames the whole calmly, with a woven signature resting quietly in the lower left corner.
How it was made
Tabriz work is knotted with the symmetrical, so-called Turkish knot, which locks each tuft square and gives the drawing — the medallion's lobes, the fine lattice, the border vine — its clean, unblurred edge. Here the knot count runs to 501,000-640,000 per square metre on a silk warp, with silk run through the wool pile; silk spins far finer than wool, so at this density the weaver could resolve the lattice down to something close to line rather than shape. The rug is signed, from the Abdollahi workshop.
At home
At 300 x 201 cm this suits a dining room or living room, under a table or anchoring a seating group. The camel ground warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood, keeping the room calm. Underfoot it is dense and firm, woven for daily use. In low evening light, camel and brick red settle together, and the medallion seems to sink into the field.
