About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
A Tabriz runner, 356 x 81 cm (11'8" x 2'8"), from the Persian city long regarded as the benchmark of workshop weaving, also written Tebris. Tabriz is known above all for its central medallions, drawn to a cartoon and knotted with the tight, precise symmetric knot. This piece carries no medallion at all; its length is organised instead into bands, a structure unusual for the type.
What you see
The first impression is of ivory and brick-red running the length of the piece, alternating rather than blending into one ground. Three lengthwise bands carry the eye from end to end, two in warm ivory and one in deeper brick-red, each filled edge to edge with a Mahi lattice of rosettes and serrated leaves. Navy, terracotta, olive and touches of dusty violet sit inside the motifs. A wide rust-red border, framed by narrow ivory and navy guard stripes and filled with small palmettes, closes the piece at both edges.
How it was made
The workshop, Pirozian, has signed the piece, a mark reserved for work it stands behind. It is hand-knotted with the symmetric, Turkish knot at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, giving the lattice its crisp, unblurred edges. The pile is wool with silk worked through the motifs; silk takes a finer knot than wool alone, which is what lets three separate bands hold their own pattern without blurring into the next.
At home
At 81 cm wide and over three metres long, this is a runner for a hallway, a space crossed rather than sat in. The ivory bands carry what light there is along a dim corridor, while the brick-red keeps it from reading pale underfoot. Dense and even, the weave is made to be walked on, and its banded rhythm moves with you the length of the hall.
