About This Tabriz

Where it comes from

This is a Tabriz Mahi, a Persian city design produced in India, 301 x 247 cm (9'11" x 8'1"), woven in a deep chocolate-brown that this pattern more often carries in ivory or rust. Tabriz is one of Persia's great weaving cities, known for precise cartoon drawing and for a design range that stretches from central medallions to dense, all-over patterns such as the Mahi lattice shown here.

What you see

At a distance the rug reads as a deep, textured field of chocolate-brown, so densely patterned that the individual motifs blur into an overall texture rather than a clear design. Come closer and the Mahi lattice resolves: small diamonds interlocking edge to edge, each holding a rosette and a pair of serrated leaves in cream, rust and navy. A wide cream border frames the field, carrying palmettes and a scrolling vine in sage green and rust, held in by a slim burgundy guard stripe.

How it was made

The density that makes this pattern legible up close comes from the knot count, 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, tied by hand in the symmetric knot Tabriz weavers favour for a tight, stable weave. Silk runs through the wool pile; because silk spins finer than wool, the knots carrying it sit closer together, and that is what sharpens the small diamonds and rosettes rather than letting them soften into blur. At 12 millimetres the pile is clipped low and even, so the surface stays flat and the sheen quiet rather than banded across the field.

At home

A rug this size suits a dining table or a living room seating group, and the chocolate-brown field will hold its own against dark wood or warm a pale oak floor equally well. Underfoot the wool-and-silk pile is dense and firm, tightly woven enough for a room in daily use rather than one kept for best. As daylight moves across it through the day, the lattice catches a soft sheen, and the pattern that reads as texture from across the room resolves, up close, into its diamonds and rosettes.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 301 × 247 cm (7.43 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 7.43 m² that is roughly 2.4 to 2.8 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
