About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
A Tabriz city rug, 207 x 152 cm (6'9" x 5'0"), from the Persian weaving capital long associated with precision and with the grand single-medallion design that became a byword for classical luxury. This piece takes a different route through that same tradition, built instead as a grid of small panels, a garden layout rather than a medallion field.
What you see
The first impression is of order: a neat checkerboard of rectangular compartments, terracotta alternating with cream, each one packed with its own dense floral micro-pattern rather than left plain. There is no medallion drawing the eye to a centre, so the whole field reads evenly, panel by panel. Olive, mustard and touches of grey-blue and dusty pink recur through a wide ivory border of floral vine, held in by a darker guard stripe just inside it, and a woven signature cartouche sits centred at the base of the border in dark brown script.
How it was made
The symmetric Turkish knot typical of Tabriz work gives the crisp, contained outlines visible in every panel, at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre — a fine enough weave to hold that quantity of small floral detail without it blurring at the edges. The pile is wool with an admixture of silk, clipped to just 7 millimetres, and it is the silk that carries the slight sheen you see catching the panel outlines, the wool that gives the surface its body. The piece is signed by the workshop of Abdollahi, a named hand behind a design built to be this orderly.
At home
A rug of this size sits well in a living room, under a seating group, or in a study where a busy pattern would normally fight for attention. Here the terracotta warms a pale floor and holds its ground against dark wood furniture without ever dominating the room, because no single panel is asking to be looked at first. Underfoot it is flat, fine and firm, a weave built for daily use rather than display. As the light moves across it through the day, the cream panels lift and the terracotta deepens, and the eye settles somewhere different each time.
