About This Tabriz

Where it comes from

This is a hand-knotted Tabriz, from the Persian city that has set the benchmark for workshop-woven carpets for five centuries, in a size of 296 x 201 cm (9'9" x 6'7"). The type is known for the central medallion carpet, precisely drawn and knotted to exacting symmetry. This piece takes that classic form and lightens it, trading the saturated jewel tones the design usually carries for something softer.

What you see

The ground is a warm ivory, and across it a central floral medallion sits with matching pendants above and below, echoing each other so the whole composition reads as mirrored. Small floral sprays scatter across the field between them, in soft rose pink, dusty peach, sage green, powder blue and a touch of gold. The wide border repeats this scrollwork in the same muted key, only a shade darker than the field, so it sits close in tone rather than cutting across it.

How it was made

Tabriz weavers use the symmetric, or Turkish, knot, which locks each thread firmly in place and gives every motif crisp, clean edges, visible in the precision of the floral scrollwork. The pile is wool blended with silk over a cotton warp, knotted at 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, fine enough to render the small florals and mirrored pendants with real clarity rather than approximation. At 10 mm the pile sits low and even, close-clipped, catching a faint sheen from the silk.

At home

This rug suits a dining room or living room, sized to sit under a table or anchor a sofa group. The ivory ground lifts a pale floor, while the rose, peach and sage hold their own against darker furniture. Underfoot the wool-and-silk pile is dense and smooth, made for daily use rather than kept for best. As light crosses it through the day, the faint sheen keeps the pastel medallion alive.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 296 × 201 cm (5.95 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 5.95 m² that is roughly 1.9 to 2.3 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
