About This Tabriz

Where it comes from

This is a Tabriz, a city-workshop rug from one of Persia's principal weaving centres, measuring 208 x 149 cm (6'10" x 4'11"). Tabriz has set the technical standard for Persian carpet-making for five centuries, and its weavers are known above all for precision: rugs knotted from a drawn plan, symmetrical and exact. This piece takes the garden-design tradition and gives it an unusually orderly form.

What you see

The first impression is a neat grid of small compartments, rust-red alternating with ivory, laid out like a checkerboard across the field. Each square holds its own tiny floral repeat, so the pattern reads as separate garden beds rather than one continuous motif. Soft camel and tan run through the fillers, with touches of sage green and dusty blue, while gold-ochre and rose-pink appear in the wide floral border that frames the whole design without crowding it.

How it was made

That order is the product of exacting work. The rug is hand-knotted with the symmetrical Tabriz knot, which locks each square cleanly against its neighbour and gives the compartment edges their crisp, drawn quality. Knot density reaches up to 500,000 per square metre, close enough that the small floral fillers stay legible rather than blurring together. The pile, wool with silk woven through it and clipped to 7 millimetres, carries the light sheen that lifts each panel.

At home

At just over two metres by one and a half, this rug suits a seating area or a dining table, where its grid can be seen in full. The rust and ivory panels warm a pale floor and hold their own against dark wood. Underfoot the pile is short, dense and firm, made for daily use. As light shifts through the room, the silk catches differently square by square, so the grid never quite sits still.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 208 × 149 cm (3.10 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 3.10 m² that is roughly 1.4 to 1.5 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
