About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a Tabriz runner, 290 x 78 cm (9'6" x 2'7"), signed by the Pirozian workshop, one of the houses that has kept Tabriz's name for precision and disciplined drawing for generations. Tabriz is where the Persian medallion was perfected, and here it appears in its processional form, the Seh Torandj, three medallions strung along the runner's length rather than one held at the centre.
What you see
The field is a dark navy, close to blue-black, filled edge to edge with a small, dense diaper of Mahi rosettes that reads almost as texture before it resolves into pattern. Along the centre axis three medallions rise from that ground in ivory, the outer two noticeably smaller than the one in the middle, each carrying a small pendant lobe that ties it to its neighbour. Rust red, mustard gold and touches of black and burgundy pick out the detail inside them. A wide, multi-band border in ivory, patterned with red and dark floral vine, closes the field on both sides and takes up nearly a fifth of the width.
How it was made
The knot here is the symmetric, or Turkish, knot Tabriz is known for, tied at a density of between 441,000 and 500,000 to the square metre, a count that keeps the small-scale Mahi diaper crisp rather than letting it blur into a wash of colour. Wool carries the field and border, but the pile through the medallions and their pendant lobes is spun with silk, and silk takes a finer, tighter knot than wool alone, which is why those three shapes hold a light sheen that the rest of the field does not. The workshop's signature, Pirozian, is woven into the piece itself, a mark of a named hand standing behind the drawing.
At home
At 290 x 78 cm this is a runner for a hallway or a landing, somewhere it will be seen along its length and walked over rather than stood beside. The dark navy ground holds its own in a space with little daylight of its own, and the ivory medallions travel down it like stepping stones, each one caught faintly by the silk worked into its threads. The wool ground and dense symmetric knot make this a rug built to take footsteps, not to be kept from them. Whatever light passes down that hallway will find the medallions first.
