About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a Tabriz, one of the great weaving cities of Persia, made in a workshop from a drawn plan rather than from memory, and it measures 336 x 252 cm (11'0" x 8'3"). Tabriz is known above all for precision — for medallion designs drawn with an exactness few other centres attempt — and this piece carries that discipline on a ground colour rarer than the ivory or red usually seen in the type: a warm rosé-beige with a hint of camel running through it.
What you see
That warmth sits under a dense Mahi lattice, fine and even across the whole field, outlined throughout in dark navy so the pattern stays crisp against the soft ground. At the centre a scalloped medallion in deep brick-red opens with two pendants above and below it, the strongest colour in the piece and the point the eye settles on first. Around all this runs a wide cream border, filled with rosettes in red, gold and olive-green and closed at each edge by a narrow dark guard stripe, the contrast against the rosé field giving the whole rug a clear, settled frame. Near the left edge, close to the border, a small woven cartouche carries the weaver's signature.
How it was made
The precision comes from the symmetric, or Turkish, knot Tabriz workshops favour, which locks each knot tight against its neighbours and holds a drawn line exactly where the cartoon placed it. At a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, that line stays sharp even at this soft palette, where a looser weave would let the colours bleed into one another. The pile itself is wool with silk worked through it, and it is the silk that lets the finer details of the lattice and the medallion's scalloped edge come through so cleanly, since it takes a finer thread than wool alone allows. At 7 mm the pile is kept low enough for that detail to read clearly, and the piece is signed, the work of a named master, Abdollahi.

At 336 x 252 cm this is a dining room or living room piece, sized to sit under a table and chairs or to anchor a sofa group. The rosé-beige ground warms a pale floor without competing with darker wood furniture, and the brick-red medallion holds its own against either. Underfoot the weave is dense and firm, a construction built to be walked on rather than kept for best, and the short pile with its light silk sheen means the medallion catches whatever light crosses the room, shifting gently through the day rather than sitting flat.
