About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
A Tabriz Mahi carries the name of one of Persia's great weaving cities, though this particular piece was made in India, in the same design tradition. It measures 205 x 202 cm (6'9" x 6'7"), a near-square format that is unusual for an all-over Mahi lattice, a pattern more often woven long and rectangular to run the length of a hall or a dining table. Tabriz work is known above all for precision, and this piece keeps to that discipline even in an uncommon shape.
What you see
The field is a deep brick red, filled edge to edge with a fine diamond lattice and small rosettes, repeating with no break and no medallion to interrupt it. There is a quiet uniformity to the effect, almost like a printed textile until you look closely and find every line hand-drawn. A wide ivory border holds the field in check, carrying rust-red palmettes and a running vine scroll, framed by narrow navy and olive-brown guard stripes. Against the red ground the border reads calm rather than ornate, which is not always true of this design.
How it was made
That calm comes from the weaving itself. The pile is wool with an admixture of silk, knotted onto a cotton warp at a density of 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, using the symmetrical knot Tabriz weavers favour for a tight, stable weave. Silk spins finer than wool, so wherever it enters the pile the weaver can tie a smaller, crisper knot, which is why the lattice holds such clean edges at this scale. A pile of only 12 mm keeps that fine drawing on the surface rather than softening it.
At home
At just over two metres square, this rug suits a dining room under a round or square table, or a seating group where a rectangular runner would look wrong. The red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor without dominating the room, and the ivory border gives the eye somewhere to rest. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than a room kept for best, and in low sun the silk in the pile catches a soft, shifting sheen across the lattice.
