About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
A Tabriz, from the workshop city of northwest Iran, measuring 252 x 202 cm (8'3" x 6'7"). Tabriz has drawn the templates for Persian carpet design for five centuries, and its name is closely tied to the classical medallion format on which its weavers built their reputation. This piece carries that format, but with a contrast rarely seen in it: a deep navy field standing in for the red ground that usually carries a Tabriz medallion.
What you see
The eye goes first to a large stepped octagonal medallion in terracotta and cream, set squarely on that navy field. Four cream cornerpieces echo its shape and colour, holding the composition in a tight, mirrored symmetry. Around the field runs a wide brick-red border, filled with small floral cartouches and rosettes, itself framed by narrow ivory guard stripes. Against the navy, both medallion and border read with unusual clarity, so the whole design feels graphic in a way an all-over red Tabriz rarely does.
How it was made
That crispness is a matter of technique as much as colour. The rug is knotted in the symmetric, or Turkish, knot Tabriz weavers favour for its tight, stable structure, and the pile combines wool with silk, the silk finer than wool and so able to hold a sharper edge on every contour. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, on a cotton warp, drawing a medallion this scaled and this precisely bordered took months of steady work. The piece is signed by the workshop of Rahimi, one detail a Tabriz specialist will recognise at a glance.
At home
A rug of this size sits well under a dining table for six or anchoring a seating group in a living room. The navy holds its ground against dark wood or leather furniture and against a pale floor it reads as a deep, settled colour rather than a heavy one, while the terracotta medallion keeps the room from feeling cool. Underfoot the pile is low, dense and firm, built for a room in regular use rather than one kept for best. Silk catches the light differently to wool, so as daylight moves across the room the medallion shifts in tone through the day, never sitting quite still.
