About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
Tabriz is one of Persia's oldest weaving cities, and the name is usually shorthand for exacting symmetry and a bold central medallion. This piece measures 203 x 147 cm (6'8" x 4'10") and follows that same medallion tradition, but in a register the city is not best known for: soft and tonal, rather than the high-contrast drama typical of the type.
What you see
The first impression is a warm ivory field, dense with small-scale floral pattern, from which a large star-pointed medallion emerges in a gentle peach-apricot. The medallion's pendant points reach outward across the field, coming close to the border on every side without disturbing its calm. Scattered through the floral ground are quiet touches of brown, terracotta, olive and a little navy, none of them loud enough to break the ivory-and-apricot harmony. A wide floral vine border, in the same apricot family and outlined in a thin dark line, closes the design and takes up roughly a fifth of the rug's width.
How it was made
The precision behind that calm is a Tabriz signature: the rug is hand-knotted in the symmetric, or Turkish, knot, which locks each row tightly against the next and holds every outline exactly where the weaver drew it. The pile is wool with an admixture of silk, and because silk spins so much finer than wool, it lets the knot count run to 321,000-380,000 per square metre without the medallion's points or the floral filler ever blurring into one another. At a 10 mm pile height the surface stays even and matte, with a soft, hand-spun feel rather than any sheen, so the softness you see is a matter of colour and drawing, not of finish.
At home
At this size the rug suits a bedroom underfoot, or a smaller seating corner in a living room, somewhere it is seen up close and often. Against pale floorboards or light furniture the ivory ground and apricot medallion warm the room rather than compete with it; against darker wood, the same tones lift it gently. Underfoot it is dense and firm, with just enough depth in the wool-and-silk pile to feel substantial without demanding a hushed room around it. As daylight moves across it through the day, the apricot in the medallion and border catches warmer and cooler by turns, which is the kind of detail a quieter Tabriz gives you time to notice.
