About This Tabriz

Where it comes from

This is a Tabriz runner, 250 x 60 cm (8'2" x 1'11"), from one of Persia's principal weaving cities. Tabriz has drawn the pattern for Persian carpet-making for five centuries, its workshops built on precise cartoons and the symmetric knot, and its weavers are known above all for the central medallion designs that became a benchmark of Persian luxury.

What you see

The field is a deep navy black, filled edge to edge with a fine Mahi lattice that gives the ground constant, quiet movement. Down its centre axis runs a chain of ivory medallions, each one floating clear of the pattern beneath it, so the eye follows a line of light down the length of the runner rather than resting on a single point. A wide ivory border, planted with rust and slate floral sprays, closes the design, held in place by narrow dark guard stripes.

How it was made

It is knotted by hand in the symmetric Turkish knot Tabriz is known for, at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, work that runs to months at the loom. The pile is wool finished with silk, and because silk spins far thinner than wool, a weaver can turn a tighter knot where the design needs it — which is why the medallions keep their crisp edges rather than blurring into the ground. A small cartouche near the border carries the workshop's signature, Pirozian.

At home

At 60 cm wide, this is a hallway or landing rug, its pattern meant to be walked past rather than seen all at once. The navy ground holds its own without daylight, and the ivory medallions carry their own light along the corridor. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, built for daily use. Catch it at an angle and the medallion chain seems to lead the eye onward.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 250 × 60 cm (1.50 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 1.50 m² that is roughly 660,000 to 750,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
