About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
Tabriz is one of Persia's great weaving cities, home for five centuries to city workshops that draw a design on paper before a single knot is tied, and to the symmetric knot that gives their carpets such crisp, disciplined outlines. This is a Tabriz medallion carpet, 219 x 148 cm (7'2" x 4'10"), hand-knotted in Iran. Where the type is usually built on deep reds, this piece is drawn in an unusually light, almost pastel register, ivory and camel rather than crimson, and the effect is a classic Tabriz composition that reads as restrained rather than opulent.
What you see
The ground is a cream-ivory field, densely covered in fine floral scrollwork that never quite stills the eye. At its centre sits a soft camel-and-gold medallion with pendants above and below, giving the whole layout a strong vertical symmetry. Around this, a broad floral border carries palmette cartouches at the corners and midpoints, worked in the same gentle camel and sage tones as the field, so the border frames the design without overpowering it. Touches of dusty rose, powder blue and muted terracotta run quietly through the scrollwork, held together by fine lavender-grey outlines that keep every motif sharply defined.
How it was made
That sharpness is a direct result of the materials. The warp is silk, which spins far thinner than cotton or wool and lets the weaver tie a much tighter knot, here reaching 501,000 to 640,000 per square metre, a density that takes months at the loom and is what allows the palmettes and scrollwork to keep such clean edges at this scale. The pile itself is wool with an admixture of silk, clipped to 7 mm, which is what gives the medallion and border their light sheen without tipping the whole field into gloss. The piece is signed, the weaver's mark of a finished, considered work rather than a length cut from stock.
