About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a Tabriz, from the Persian city that has set the benchmark for workshop-woven carpets for five centuries, 305 x 200 cm (10'0" x 6'7"). Tabriz is known above all for its central medallion designs and for a precision that comes from working to a fixed drawn cartoon rather than from memory. This piece follows that formula but softens it, so the medallion sits within the field rather than against it.
What you see
The overall impression is a pale, warm field, its ivory ground covered edge to edge in a fine Mahi lattice of camel and dark navy-grey. At its centre a scalloped medallion rises in graduated rust and brick red, the colour easing outward into the ivory around it rather than cutting against it, so it reads as a bloom rather than a block. The border stays narrow, ivory-gold, set with small polychrome rosettes in cream, rust, olive and gold that echo the field instead of framing it hard. Near the bottom edge a small woven cartouche carries the weaver's signature.
How it was made
A Tabriz of this kind is hand-knotted to a drawn cartoon, using the symmetric, so-called Turkish knot, which produces a tight, firm weave with sharply defined edges. Here the density runs to 641,000-800,000 knots per square metre, fine enough to build the shading inside the medallion as a true gradient rather than a hard ring of colour, so the rust deepens toward the centre in almost continuous steps. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton warp, clipped low and even, which gives the surface its crisp definition and its light, even sheen.
At home
At 305 x 200 cm this rug is sized for a dining table or a living room seating group, large enough to hold the furniture without leaving the room around it empty. Against a pale floor the ivory ground lifts the space, while the rust medallion holds its own quietly, never taking over the way a bolder Tabriz would. Underfoot the weave is dense and firm, low enough to sit comfortably beneath a table and sturdy enough for a room in daily use. As the light moves through the day it catches the graduated rust of the medallion, and the bloom at the centre keeps shifting gently rather than sitting still.
