About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
A round Tabriz medallion carpet, 203 x 203 cm (6'8" x 6'8"), from one of Persia's great weaving cities. Tabriz has drawn the templates for classical Persian carpet design for five centuries, and its name is closely tied to the medallion form itself. This piece keeps the form but not the usual manner of colouring it: medallion, field and border are all held within one soft, related range, rather than set against each other in the strong contrast Tabriz medallions are known for.
What you see
The first impression is ivory, warm and even, before any pattern registers. Within it sits a large scalloped medallion, filled edge to edge with fine floral scrollwork, and around that an open ivory field carrying scattered floral sprays that echo the same forms at a smaller scale. The border, in a soft apricot-peach, is no louder than the field it encloses — a moderate band of the same florals rather than a change of register. Nowhere does the eye land on a hard edge of colour; medallion, spandrels and border all read as variations on the same soft palette, which is what gives this particular Tabriz its unusually quiet, almost monochrome character.
How it was made
It is hand-knotted with the symmetric, or Turkish, knot that Tabriz weavers favour for exactly this kind of fine, disciplined drawing, at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre — the kind of count that takes a workshop months rather than weeks to complete. The pile is wool with silk, and the silk is not spread evenly through the field but concentrated along the medallion and the floral outlines, where its finer fibre catches light that plain wool does not. That is the light sheen visible along the pattern lines, and it is also why the design reads as clearly as it does despite the closeness of the colours: definition here comes from a change in surface, not a change in hue.
At home
A round carpet asks for a round arrangement, and at just over two metres across this one sits comfortably under a round dining table, or centred beneath a circle of chairs in a living room. Its ivory and peach will soften a dark floor and hold their own against pale walls without needing a stronger colour nearby to justify them. The pile, at seven millimetres and firmly knotted, is dense enough underfoot for a room in regular use, while fine enough to reward bare feet. Move around it through the day and the silk in the medallion catches the light differently with each pass, so the carpet never sits still even though its colours do.
