About This Tabriz

Where it comes from

This is a Tabriz runner, 303 x 67 cm (9'11" x 2'2"), from the Persian city that has led workshop weaving for five centuries. Tabriz refined the symmetric knot into a tight, disciplined weave and built its name on drawn medallions that fill the field. Here the medallion is kept small, set alone within a long run of pattern rather than commanding it.

What you see

The field is a deep midnight blue with a dark aubergine undertone, dense with a fine Mahi lattice repeating along the whole length. Out of that repeat a single lobed medallion rises at the centre, flanked by two smaller pendant palmettes in rust-orange and cream. A wide border in camel, cream and rust carries fine floral vine stripes, with small teal accents, and holds its own clearly against the dark ground.

How it was made

Hand-knotted with the symmetric Tabriz knot, this piece carries a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre from the workshop of Pirozian. That is close to half a million knots in every square metre, enough to keep the lattice fine over three metres without blurring at the medallion's curves. The pile is wool with an admixture of silk, which takes a finer twist than wool alone and gives the lighter motif outlines their slight sheen. A small cartouche near one end carries the signature.

At home

A runner of this length belongs in a hallway or along a landing, where the midnight field reads as depth rather than gloom and the camel border catches what light there is. Underfoot the weave is dense and firm, faithful to a design meant for years of daily crossing rather than careful use. Walk it in low light and the silk in the outlines picks up every lamp you pass.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 303 × 67 cm (2.03 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 2.03 m² that is roughly 0.9 to 1.0 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
