About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a Tabriz runner in the Moharamati format, 344 x 83 cm (11'3" x 2'9"), from the Persian city that has set the benchmark for workshop-woven rugs for five centuries. Tabriz is known for the symmetric knot, for cartoons drawn and followed with precision, and for a command of colour balance rarely matched elsewhere; this piece comes from the Pirozian workshop and carries its own signed cartouche in the lower field.
What you see
The first impression is of three bands running the length of the rug: navy, then a deep rust, then navy again, each filled edge to edge with the same small-scale Mahi lattice of rosettes and serrated leaves. Cream, mustard gold, dusty rose and sage sit within the motifs, with pale blue touching in here and there. There is no medallion to gather the eye; the pattern simply repeats, band by band. A wide camel border, floral and unhurried, closes the composition, held in place by narrow cream and black guard stripes.
How it was made
Tabriz weavers work the symmetric, or Turkish, knot, which locks tighter around the warp than the asymmetric knot and holds a straighter, more disciplined line - exactly what a tri-band design needs, since the edge between navy and rust has to fall clean rather than blur. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, with silk running through the wool pile to sharpen the finest outlines further still, this runner represents months of steady work at the loom. Clipped to a low 7 mm pile, the surface reads flat, even and precise rather than soft.

A runner of this length and width belongs in a hallway or along a landing, somewhere it is seen lengthwise rather than all at once. The rust band holds its own even where daylight is scarce, and the navy on either side keeps the whole from feeling too warm or too loud; the camel border settles both against a pale floor. Underfoot it is dense and firm, wool and silk clipped tight, built for the daily walking a hallway asks of a rug rather than the occasional visitor's foot. Walk its length and the bands separate themselves out step by step, navy giving way to rust and back to navy again, the small lattice catching the light a little differently in each.
