Where it comes from
Tabriz is one of Persia's great workshop cities, where designs are drawn on paper before a single knot is tied, and this rug measures 289 x 200 cm (9'6" x 6'7"). Tabriz weavers are known for their command of colour and for the symmetric, or Turkish, knot that gives their work a taut, precise surface. This piece takes a pattern the city has produced for generations and sets it uncharacteristically pale, on an ivory ground rather than the deep red or navy it usually commands.
What you see
The field is a warm cream, and across it runs a small, dense lattice of diamonds in the Mahi, or fish, pattern, repeated edge to edge with no medallion to interrupt it. From a short distance the effect is almost textile in its evenness, the rust red picking out each diamond centre against the pale ground. A wide border frames the field, its dark rust-brown cartouche stripe carrying a floral run, held between narrower guard stripes in navy and mustard gold that pull the eye back to the edge. In the left guard stripe sits a small pale cartouche that may carry a woven mark, though it is modest enough to pass unnoticed until looked for directly.
How it was made
That evenness is the product of the symmetric knot itself, which locks tight and square and holds a fine pattern without blurring its lines. Here the density runs to 441,000-500,000 knots per square metre, a count that calls for months of steady work and allows the small-scale lattice to stay crisp rather than soften into a blur. The pile is wool finished with silk, and silk spins finer than wool, so the weavers could pack in more detail while leaving a faint sheen across the surface. The piece carries the mark of Pirozian, a Tabriz name recognised for exactly this kind of disciplined, finely drawn work.
