About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
Tabriz is one of Persia's great weaving cities, and the name usually calls to mind a bold central medallion set against a richly patterned field. This piece, at 302 x 247 cm (9'11" x 8'1"), takes the same workshop discipline in a different direction: there is no medallion at all, only an even, all-over scatter of flowers across a plain ivory ground. It is Tabriz precision without the usual grandeur.
What you see
The field reads first as a wash of cream, then resolves into small floral sprays and serrated leaves, each one repeated at almost exactly the same scale and spacing, so that no single point in the rug pulls the eye more than another. There is no medallion to anchor the composition, and none is missed. Around this quiet field runs a wide terracotta border, roughly a fifth of the rug's width, where the mood changes: dusty rose, rust, sage and gold gather into floral medallions, each one held inside its own circular vine roundel, giving the border a structured, repeating rhythm that the loose field deliberately does not have.
How it was made
This is a workshop piece, drawn on a cartoon and knotted to a plan, and the evenness you see is the direct result of that method. The weavers used the symmetric knot associated with Tabriz, tied here at a density between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre, which is close, careful work sustained across the whole field so that every spray matches its neighbours. The pile itself is wool blended with silk, kept low at 7 mm, and it is this mix that gives the surface its light sheen without ever making the pattern flat or slippery to the eye. Getting an all-over design this regular to look calm rather than mechanical takes exactly this kind of control.
At home
A rug this settled belongs under a dining table or beneath a sofa group in a living room, somewhere it will be seen in full rather than glimpsed in passing. Against pale floors the ivory ground will simply extend the room, while the terracotta border holds its edge and stops the whole thing from disappearing. Underfoot the wool and silk pile is dense but soft, firm enough for daily use and comfortable enough to sit on. As daylight moves across it through the day, the light sheen in the silk catches differently hour to hour, so the same quiet field never looks quite still.
