About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
A Tabriz, from the workshop city of north-west Iran, 215 x 146 cm (7'1" x 4'9"). Tabriz has drawn Persia's classical medallions for five centuries, usually in the rich, contrasting palette the design is known for. This piece takes the same drawing and turns the colour down almost to nothing.
What you see
The ground is an open ivory, and at first the pattern seems to be barely there, held in tone rather than colour. A star-shaped medallion sits at the centre, its points radiating outward into dense Shah-Abbasi arabesques, the scrollwork picked out in soft gold and tan against the pale field. Small powder-blue flower heads are scattered through it, with the faintest touches of sage and blush, none of them loud enough to break the ivory. A wide floral border in matching bands frames the field, set apart from it by density of drawing rather than by colour, so the whole rug reads as one continuous surface rather than a field and a frame.
How it was made
This calm is a matter of construction as much as choice. The warp is silk, which spins far finer than wool or cotton and lets the weaver tie a much tighter knot, here running to 501,000–640,000 per square metre — a density that takes many months at the loom and is what allows the scrollwork's outlines to stay this crisp rather than blurring into the ground. The symmetric knot Tabriz weavers favour holds each line square and even, and a low, 7mm pile keeps the drawing flat and legible rather than soft-edged. Wool carries the field; silk in the pile catches the light along the scrollwork, giving it the faint sheen that the open ivory does not have.
At home
A rug this pale and this finely drawn asks for a room where it will be seen up close rather than crossed in passing, and at this size it sits naturally in a bedroom, beside or in front of the bed. Against a pale floor the ivory will simply extend it; against darker boards or furniture it will lift the room without ever competing with anything in it. Underfoot the low pile is firm and even, pleasant for bare feet rather than built for heavy traffic, and it wants exactly that quieter use. Morning light will do the rest, catching the silk in the scrollwork and letting the medallion surface slowly as the room brightens.
