About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a hand-knotted Tabriz, also written Tabrīz, one of the classic city-workshop weaves of northwestern Iran, measuring 255 x 165 cm (8'4" x 5'5"). Tabriz has drawn its designs from paper cartoons for five centuries, prized for the symmetric knot that gives a taut, precise weave and for a mastery of the central medallion that other weaving cities are still measured against. This piece is far calmer than most of its kind.
What you see
The field is an open, warm ivory, left far more bare than a Tabriz medallion usually allows, so the eye settles almost immediately on the slate-blue rosette at its centre. From there, fine gold-tan scrollwork spreads outward in soft floral curls, echoed in the blue-grey spandrels anchoring each corner. The border runs wide in sage green, close to a fifth of the whole rug, carrying its own floral vine and cartouches. At each narrow end sits a cartouche woven with Persian script, a signature rather than decoration.
How it was made
Meeradj wove it on a silk warp, with a pile of wool blended with silk clipped to seven millimetres, low enough to keep every scrolling line sharp rather than soft-edged. At 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre, tied in the symmetric Tabriz knot, the medallion's outline and the lettering in the end cartouches hold their shape rather than blur, which is exactly what allowed the weaver to leave so much of the field empty and still keep it worth a second look up close.
At home
At 255 x 165 cm it sits well in a living room, under a coffee table in front of a sofa, or at the foot of a bed. The ivory field lifts a room furnished in dark wood and holds its own equally well against a pale floor, while the sage border keeps the whole composition framed rather than floating loose. Tightly knotted and firm underfoot, it takes daily use without complaint. As daylight crosses it through the day, the silk in the pile catches quietly in the medallion and the florets, never announcing itself, only ever there to be noticed again.
