About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
A Tabriz Mahi, hand-knotted in India, 350 x 249 cm (11'6" x 8'2"). The Tabriz design tradition comes from one of Persia's great weaving cities, prized for precision drawing and a command of colour that has made its medallion and lattice patterns a benchmark of the craft. This piece carries that lattice, but not the colour it is usually known for.
What you see
The first impression is of a field so dark it reads almost black-brown rather than the wine-red these Mahi patterns normally sit on. Across it runs a fine, even diamond lattice, so small in scale that from a distance it behaves like a texture in the weave rather than a printed pattern. A wide ivory border interrupts the darkness, carrying floral vines in rust-red, olive and navy, and is itself held between narrower guard bands in the same palette. Against the near-black ground, that border reads brighter than it would on a conventional Tabriz, and the whole piece feels quieter than its type usually allows.
How it was made
The lattice owes its fineness to the knotting itself: a symmetric knot tied by hand, at a density of 321,000 to 380,000 per square metre, which is the kind of count that takes many months at the loom to complete. The pile is wool blended with silk over a cotton warp, and silk spins to a finer thread than wool alone, so it lets the weaver tie a tighter knot and draw a sharper edge around each small diamond — which is exactly why the pattern holds its precision even at this scale. Clipped to a 12 mm pile, the surface stays smooth and even, with a light sheen that catches along the silk.
