Where it comes from
Tabriz sits among the great weaving cities of Persia, known for precision worked from a drawn plan rather than memory. This piece measures 207 x 151 cm (6'9" x 4'11"), a city-workshop rug through and through, though it departs from the medallion design the city is most famous for. In its place is a garden grid, and that choice is what makes this particular Tabriz worth pausing on.
What you see
The field reads, at first glance, as a neat checkerboard: small squares of warm terracotta alternating with pale cream, each one holding its own miniature floral repeat rather than joining a single continuous pattern. The effect is closer to a quilt of garden plots than to the sweeping medallions Tabriz weavers are usually praised for. Around this grid runs a wide, multi-band border in sage green, cream and rust, its palmette vines and dark outlines giving the piece a frame with real weight, taking up close to a fifth of the rug's width and carrying much of its presence.
How it was made
Producing that many small, self-contained florals cleanly required a tight, disciplined weave, and here the pile is wool with an admixture of silk, knotted at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre on a cotton warp. Silk threads spin thinner than wool, so where the two are combined the knots can sit closer together, and it is this density that keeps each little square's floral diaper sharp rather than blurred at the edges. A low pile of 7 mm was chosen to hold that definition, and the result is a surface with a soft sheen gathered in the motifs rather than spread flat across the field.
