About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a Tabriz, also written Täbris, one of Persia's great workshop cities, hand-knotted in Iran and measuring 225 x 163 cm (7'5" x 5'4"). Tabriz weavers have set the standard for symmetrical-knot precision and medallion design for five centuries, usually working in the deep reds and blues collectors expect of the city. This piece takes that same discipline into a far quieter palette.
What you see
The field opens in a pale sage green, softer than the tone this city is usually known for, and across it runs a dense floral vine, its stems carrying small figures that resemble birds and deer, worked so discreetly into the pattern that they could easily pass as more flowers. At the centre sits a lobed medallion in dusty terracotta, echoed in the cream cartouches of a broad terracotta border. Narrow ivory guard stripes, each set with tiny red rosettes, close the design at the edge.
How it was made
This density, between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre, comes from a wool pile carrying a thread of silk, which spins far finer than wool and lets the weaver tie a smaller, tighter knot. That is what holds the vine's outline clean and gives the bird and deer figures their crisp edge. A cotton warp keeps the structure stable, and a pile kept to seven millimetres lets the pattern sit close to the surface. Work at this density is measured in months at the loom.
