About This Tabriz

Where it comes from

This is a Tabriz, from the celebrated workshop city of north-west Persia, at 255 x 167 cm (8'4" x 5'6"). Tabriz weavers have set the standard for classical Persian medallion design for five centuries, prized for precise drawing and finely balanced colour. Here that tradition appears in a ground rarely seen in the style: a soft sage green in place of the usual ivory, red or navy.

What you see

The eye settles first on that pale green field, cool and quiet, before finding the ivory medallion drawn at its centre with matching pendants above and below. Around them, curling floral vine sprays spread densely across the ground, and the whole composition is held by a wide cream border filled with the same scrolling vines. Field and border share enough tone that the transition feels gentle rather than sharp, the border reading as an extension of the field rather than a frame set against it.

How it was made

The medallion's crisp edges and the fine curls of vine work come from the symmetric, Turkish knot Tabriz favours, tied tight to hold a sharp line. A silk warp lets the weaver work far finer than cotton allows, carrying a wool-and-silk pile at 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre — a density that means months at the loom. Signed by the Taraghi workshop, the pile stands just 7 mm deep, flat enough to keep that precision visible, with a light sheen where the silk shows through.

At home

At 255 x 167 cm, this rug suits a bedroom or a quiet seating corner, close enough to read properly. The sage green sits calmly against pale floors and holds its own beside darker furniture, cooler than the usual red or ivory ground. Underfoot the pile is low, dense and firm, comfortable for daily use. Daylight moving across it catches the silk in the vine work and the medallion's edge, so the surface never sits quite still.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 255 × 167 cm (4.26 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre; across 4.26 m² that is roughly 2.1 to 2.7 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
